- Stop thinking about it, and be in the present: When you just arrived at a party and you don’t know anyone. You start to ask yourself do I know them? why are they looking weird at me?, Am I wearing the wrong clothes?. Is this sound familiar?. We tend to live in our mind asking questions and not living in the present. We forget to smell, see the things around us, and others. Mindfulness is a great way to live in the “now”, be yourself and stop worrying about what other thinks about you. Be yourself and practicing mindfulness is a way of letting go your thoughts.
- Stop thinking about the past and future: Thinking about the past is a waste of time. Thinking about the future is good, but when you are distracted from work or in a social interaction it is a bad thing. Try to control your mind everytime you feel that your mind is going to the past or future. Breath in and out and focus what is around you. Try to use your senses such as visual, smell, touch, hearing, and olfaction.
- Focus on your breathing: This is an easy tip you can apply in any place you are at. When you are feeling overwhelmed with thoughts.First, start to inhale and hold the air for four seconds. Second, exhale slowly all the air retained in your stomach. Repeat this exercise 3 to 5 times and you will see the results.
- Tell yourself: Talking to yourself will be kind of weird for most of us, but it’s a good technique to live in the present moment. In this tip, ask yourself where are you? what are you doing now?. For example, if you are at Starbucks talking with a friend and suddenly, you start to have thoughts like: Did I pay the rent for my apartment?, Did I lock my apartment’s door?. In this moment ask the questions, it will help you to realize what’s is going on the present moment.
